SPRED GROUP’S SUMMER EVENTS
I attended a meeting of the local SSVP Ayr Group earlier in the year. This group covers both St Margaret’s and St Paul’s Churches. At this meeting I reminded them of what SPRED is and what we do. It was then agreed that they would give us generous donation, in addition to their monthly contributions, of £300. It was further agreed that this would help pay for any planned summer events.
All SPRED Groups were then invited to organise their own local Summer Event. More pictures of these events can now be seen in the Gallery section of our Website. Below is a brief outline of what took place.
ST MARGARET’S AYR GROUPS
In order to accommodate everyone who wanted to come we made two afternoon sessions available in LA Bowl in Ayr, booking 2 lanes with bumpers. A total of 19 people attended over the two days. We had a special guest on the second of our 2 days, namely Fr Laurent Bahati, who has newly joined the Diocese as an Assistant Parish Priest.
Although Fr Laurent only bowled one ball he still ended up with the joint top score of 125! He was joined on this score by Billy from the Thursday evening Group. Everyone managed to score well and a special mention to another of our guests, young John, who scored 87! The dark horse bowler goes to Hilary of the Monday evening Group, who scored an excellent 117. Everyone had a lot of fun, as you will see if you go to the rest of the pictures on the Gallery page of the Website. Drinks were provided as was the option of some hot food – although a number of people preferred the option of a nice cake!
KILMARNOCK PARISHES GROUP
Those present enjoyed an afternoon of ten-pin bowling at The Garage in Kilmarnock. Although not all of the Friends could be there, a good time was had by all with Marjorie coming out top among the Faith Companions and John winning the trophy for the Friends in the tense final round. Well done, John!
This was the first time some of us had bowled in a long time so congratulations to everyone for participating and joining in the fun.

After the bowling, we enjoyed burgers and drinks in the iconic Wimpy Cafe within the Garage. There was plenty of chat and enjoyment of the food and of the lively music. We left eager to meet again and will do as our SPRED Community Sessions will begin again soon.
ST JOHN’S GROUP
It was agreed that the St John’s Group were going to do something a bit different from the Bowling event chosen by the rest of the Groups. A number of Friends and Catechists attended the St John’s Garden Fete. Everyone had a wonderful time and they especially enjoyed sampling some of the tea room’s delights! It was also agreed that a new CD player would be bought for the Group.
